RDS Collection error: Unable to configure the RD Sessionhost server. Invalid operation

Hey visitors,

I would like to share with you some troubleshooting steps I had over the week with terminal servers on Windows Server 2016.

I had a task to install a terminal server at my new customers, I have installed two new RDSH without any problem while trying to create a session collection I got the following unexpected error:

“Unable to configure the RD Sessionhost server. Invalid operation”

This error prevents me to create session collection, didn’t realize why I am getting this error, it was scratch TS installation, after deep investigation I found that at past probably someone has been applied RDS group policies, I checked these settings and reset them by set “Not configured”

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Security
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing

Afterward I set them as “Not configured” and restarted the servers, I was able to create a new session collection successfully, however, I experienced another issue with license, I tried to install SPLA license and noticed that the “Available” column is showing 0, the issued shows 30, apparently, the license components screwed up, so I tried to remove and install it again and it still didn’t work, the only solution I found is to perform the following steps:

1.Deactivate the LS
2.Remove the Licensing role
3.Restart the server
4.Renamed the existing “lserver” folder to .old (c:\windows\system32\)
5.Install the licensing role
6.lserver folder will be created automatically
7.Activate the License server

Hope it is useful for you,
